Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injections

Relief for Nerve Pain

Shooting pain in one or both legs is often caused by compression of a spinal nerve root. A lumbar epidural steroid injection can help alleviate this type of pain, by coating the irritated nerve root with a steroid medication.

If conservative management techniques like physical therapy and oral medications aren’t doing enough to improve your chronic back pain or radiating nerve pain, it may be time to see if a lumbar epidural steroid injection could help.

What Are Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injections?

After applying a local anesthetic to the target treatment area, we inject the steroid medication directly into the epidural space (between the vertebrae and spinal cord) of the spine, calming inflamed nerves. If more than one nerve is causing pain, we may inject medication at other levels of the spine.

What to Expect From the Procedure

Because of the local anesthetic, the injections are not painful, but patients usually have some degree of soreness and swelling for a day or two afterward. Most people are able to return to normal daily activity the day after this outpatient procedure. Repeat injections may be necessary to keep pain at a manageable level.
